Summer’s here, and it’s the perfect time for a family adventure! But the big question is—where to? Sure, you could visit a theme park or explore a bustling city, but why not try something a little different this year. Plan a road trip around what your kids love, and we promise—it’ll be a trip they’ll never forget (and neither will you). Here are 5 kid-friendly road trip ideas based on their favorite things!

The High Sierra: The Ideal Road Trip Getaway for Families

One key to successful road trips for kids? Keeping restlessness at bay. I still remember those endless, boring miles of cornfields between Chicago and the West Coast. To make it bearable, our parents would hit the road at dawn—we’d sleep in the car until breakfast, then drive a few more hours.

That’s what makes the High Sierra such a perfect road trip destination. You don’t need to do that. Everything’s close by, with plenty of chances to stop, stretch, play, and take in something amazing. Coming from the East Coast? There are countless mid-sized airports such as Sacramento, Fresno or even Bishop that can have you enjoying the Sierra’s charm within an hour.

Furry Friends and Animal Lovers

When it comes to spotting wildlife in their natural habitat, there’s no better place than the Eastern Sierra. Thanks to its rugged terrain, low population, and dramatic elevation changes, this region packs a wide variety of habitats into a relatively small area—perfect for birds, mammals, fish, and more.

In fact, although the Eastern Sierra makes up just 10% of California’s land, it’s home to over 50% of the state’s species. That means your chances of seeing wildlife are high—but some spots offer even better odds. For example, in spring and fall, Mono Lake becomes a basecamp for millions of migratory birds. And if wild horses are on your list, keep your eyes open along SR-120 between Benton and Mono Lake, where a large herd roams free.

History Buffs in the Making

Even if your child thinks history is “boring,” they’ll be swept up in the adventure of stepping back into California’s Gold Rush era in Tuolumne County.

Start at Columbia State Historic Park, a car-free, living history town where the sights, sounds—even the smells—transport you straight to the 1800s. Your kids can pan for gold and feel the heat from a working blacksmith’s forge. They can also explore the Wells Fargo Express Office to see how people, mail, and valuables were transported back in the day.

Next, take a short drive to Railtown 1897 and step into the golden age of railroading. Watch real steam locomotives being restored in a working roundhouse. After, hop aboard one for a scenic ride through the foothills. And if the trains or landscapes seem familiar, they should—this place has starred in dozens of Hollywood films, including Back to the Future Part III.

Some kids have so much energy, they need plenty of activities and space to roam. Head up one of California’s most scenic byways—Ebbetts Pass—where adventure and fresh mountain air await. Cresting at over 8,730 feet, this high-elevation area offers the perfect escape from the summer heat, with family-friendly hikes and stunning views. Rent paddleboards from Bear Valley Adventure Company and explore beautiful lakes like Spicer Reservoir, or cast a line at the serene Lake Alpine. Beach Boys and Girls

The High Sierra… with beaches? It might sound surprising, but stay with us. Close your eyes and picture this: temperatures in the mid-70s, a cool breeze coming off crystal-clear waters, and towering peaks rising right from the shoreline. You dig your toes into soft, Caribbean-like sand, then hop into a kayak and paddle across water so clear you can see over 70 feet straight down.
