Just because snow is on the ground doesn’t mean your bike has to hibernate. The Sierra Nevada offers incredible winter mountain biking, from fat tire adventures across snow covered trails to tacky dirt in the lower foothills… and everything in between.

Great Option When Winter Hits Pause

The Sierra’s climate in winter is a mix of massive snow storms and stretches of calm, sunny weather. During these windows, trails with good drainage, like gravel or sandy sections, offer some of the best mountain biking of the season and opportunities for activities beyond skiing. Higher up, where snow piles deep, fat tire bikes with their oversized monster truck like tires let you ride in places you would never expect. You’ll be pedaling across snow, frozen paths, and even sandy beaches. Don’t think of winter in the Sierra as a break from biking. It’s a whole new way to explore the mountains.

On a cold winter morning, the Sawtooth Mountain Bike Trail Network shows why fat biking here feels like pure magic. When the freeze thaw cycle lines up, snowmobile packed routes like the 06 Forest Service Road turn into fast, rideable corridors. It’ll feel more like surfing than pedaling. Along the way, singletrack like the Sawtooth branch off into wide open meadows, forested roads, and rolling climbs with big Tahoe views and playful descents. Best of all, the entire network sits just two miles from the historic downtown. That helps make winter riding here quiet, gritty, and incredibly accessible. There are also several outfitters in Truckee, including The Backcountry, where you can easily rent a fat tire bike and head straight to the trails.
